Mission Votes for the Best Super Bowl 2020 Commercial

For those of us who don’t take off for #SuperMonday, the day after the Super Bowl always has the office abuzz with one topic: Which was the best commercial? This year we surveyed Mission employees to find out what they liked and why they liked it.

Here’s what we learned:

  • Comedy is a clear winner. Who knows, maybe it’s the type of person that agency lifestyle attracts, but 17 of the 20 votes were for an ad with a comedic element. Jason Momoa and Rocket Mortgage (and some killer CGI) expertly delivered an approachable take on comedy and won our top vote.

  • Nostalgia is powerful...or maybe just Bill Murray. While Momoa stole the show with pure hilarity, the Jeep “Groundhog Day” commercial tugged at our heartstrings with its “masterful recreation of a classic.” We also liked that it “had more universal appeal and wasn’t entertaining at the expense of a competitor brand or demographic.”

  • One size does not fit all. Although we all leaned towards comedy, we didn’t all agree on what it was that made us laugh. While some liked Ellen and Portia’s Alexa commercial jabbing at dependence on technology, others liked the Doritos commercial with Sam Elliott and Lil Nas X because “mustache dancing = funny.”

Other honorable mentions?

The price of this year’s commercials topped $5.6 million for 30 seconds of air time. With 102 million captive viewers ready to ingest your brand, how do you make an impactful and memorable impression? Mission has explored that very question recently with National Bohemian beer and The Maryland Zoo. Read those case studies and view more of our recent work here.
